Please note that changing registry items is always a risky thing and if you re not experienced/comfortable doing this then I would take it to a repair shop. I have yet to have someone tell me this fix though. I take no responsibility for damage done from my advice etc etc.

I had tried everything to fix the disappearing DVD drive, and it ends up the issue I had with Windows 7 was with AHCI. If you check the BIOS and you have installed Windows with AHCI enabled usually says SATA mode is AHCI - can choose between AHCI, ATA/IDE.., there is something that would need to be changed:

In regedit, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE System CurrentControlSet Services Msahci Start is set to 0, BIOS SATA mode at AHCI, and I had no DVD drive. Change the Msahci Start value to 1 and reboot; low and behold Windows detected my drive and I am off and running. It s been a thorn in my side for some time so I hope this post helps someone. Again, if you re unsure of editting the BIOS take it to a repair shop or send it in for repairs depending on your warranty status...

I would suggest you to contact at Dell for the latest drivers for your computer. Try to contact Dell at the below mentioned website -

There were no new driver at Dell - only a XP-driver available

It seems that the driver you are using is not supported and needs an update. It was just a coincidence that the driver was working before the windows update was performed. It would have surely created issues at some later stage. Also let us know which Windows Update did you install. Check for the Windows update at-

Click Start, Settings and then control panel all items view. Click on the Windows Update icon.

Click on view update history link.

To view the details of a single update select and right click on a listed windows update, then click on view details. Click Close when done.

Installed updates were KB976749, 975467, 975364, 974571, 974431, 974332, 974455, 973525.

You may want to perform the below mentioned steps and check if that resolves the issue –

Click Start, and then click All Programs.

Click Accessories, and then click Run.

Type regedit, and then click OK.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318

In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.

On the Edit menu, click Delete.

When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.

In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further.

Exit Registry Editor.

Restart the computer.

The dell support is not a good help because the drivers still be the same since 2006, looking in the net for an update of the DVD RW or DVD ROM by the manufacture is imposible because the models are to old the only real solution to the problem is the edition of the registry or buy a new DVD ROM/ DVD RW and be sure that make a copy of the drivers in a USB flash drive or in a external hard drive or in a Sd memory card that will be the only ones that will be read by the motherboard because the drive files for the USB ports are part of the chip set and the chip bridge BIOS.All this is because free microsoft windows XP support will end in the 2014, windows vista in the 2016 whit the a posible support until 2017, windows 7 in the 2020 or early and by that time only windows 8 will be the only one that will be have an active support
